Springwood and the surrounding towns face great challenges and opportunities in the future and with this fact in mind a group of local organisations and individuals have decided to band together to provide a single point of contact for local residents, community groups and businesses and to present a unified voice to all layers of Government on the issues that matter to the Community.
The Springwood Neighbourhood Centre, Springwood Chamber of Commerce and Save Our Springwood are the founding members of the Springwood Village Coalition. The Coalition has recently sought membership from other Community groups and individuals and the initial response has been encouraging.
“At the core of the aims of the Springwood Village Coalition is the desire to work towards implementing the Springwood Precinct Vision Statement as set out in Blue Mountains City Council’s Local Environmental Plan (LEP) of 2005.”, said interim President of the Coalition Alan Crooks, also Secretary of the Springwood Chamber of Commerce.
The key objective of the LEP is to maintain and enhance the distinctive traditional pattern of continuous retail terraces interspersed by landmark buildings [see ADDENDUM 1 for full statement of LEP Vision and Objectives] within Springwood. “We feel that it is important for the community to have a voice as we move forward with the Federal Government and the Council to utilise the $9.5 Million grant the Community has recently received”, added Liz Murphy, also Community Development Worker at the Springwood Neighbourhood Centre.
Other aims of the Coalition are:
To promote Springwood as a centre for social, commercial and community activities;
To preserve the unique character and heritage of the town, community lands and the environment;
To encourage sharing of information and resources between members and with the community, acting as a link between individuals and resources;
To provide an active networking forum for development of ideas and projects to identify and support community needs; and
To advocate for adequate services and facilities for the area being committed to social justice for all residents.
All local residents, community organisations and businesses are invited to join the Coalition and support the achievement of these aims.
